When should I use the power adapter that comes with a KVM switch?

I understand that the KVM cables provide power to the switch, making the adapter optional, but when, if ever is the adapter a requirement for operation

If the KVM has Usb connectors/cables the maximum length is 5 Meters (Total) if u need moore u have to use the adapter so the KVM gets the function of a power insert er (like a hub) then u can use 5 moore meters totally! If length is moore then 5 meters without the adapter power it don´t work
