how to connect a fiber optical audio cable from my tv to a xbox 360? please help me?

hello i just bought an fiber optical audio cable because my friend told me that it has a better sound so i bought it and when i got home i installed i connected in my tv and then in the 360 but i did not get no sound i do not know if i have to buy some thing else or if i have to plug in the white and red audio cable that already comes with the 360, because i did not connected does when i plug in the optical audio calbe. please help me.

Check that the 360′s audio output is set to optical. if you take out the end plugged into the TV, it should be glowing red if the 360 is set correctly. what TV do you have? as phreak said, most TVs do not have optical inputs, rather they have outputs

and also- the red and white will work just fine.
